Inquiry Phase: Connect

At the beginning of the Connect Phase, a student may ask:

  • What interests me about this idea or topic?
  • What do I already know or think I know about this topic?
  • What background information would help me get an overview of my topic?

INDICATORS

  • Connects ideas to self; finds personal passion.
  • Connects ideas to previous knowledge.
  • Observes, experiences.
  • Gains background and context.
  • Identifies key concepts and terms.
  • Identifies the “big picture” or schema.

Before moving to the Wonder Phase, a student may ask:

  • Do I know enough about the idea or topic to ask good questions?
  • Am I interested enough in the idea or topic to investigate it?

AASL Standards for the 21st Century Learner

·          STANDARD 1: Learners use skills, resources, & tools to inquire, think critically, and gain knowledge.

Skills

o    1.1.1 Follow an inquiry-based process in seeking knowledge in curricular subjects, and make the real-world connections for using this process in own life.

o    1.1.2 Use prior and background knowledge as context for new learning.

 

 

·          STANDARD 4: Learners use skills, resources, & tools to pursue personal and aesthetic growth.

Skills

o    4.1.1 Read, view, and listen for pleasure and personal growth.

o    4.1.2 Read widely and fluently to make connections with self, the world, and previous reading.

o    4.1.4 Seek information for personal learning in a variety of formats and genres.

o    4.1.5 Connect ideas to own interests and previous knowledge and experience. 

 

Dispositions in Action 

 

o    4.2.1 Display curiosity by pursuing interests through multiple resources.

Responsibilities

o    4.3.3 Seek opportunities for pursuing personal and aesthetic growth.

Self-Assessment Strategies

o    4.4.1 Identify own areas of interest

 o   4.4.3 Recognize how to focus efforts in personal learning.
